Is seo all the answer

This just came across my mind and think it will be right to share with you guys so that you tell me your idea about it.
Many webmasters like myself have been concentrating too much on seo that we forget about the real traffic itself. Do you do backlinking just for seo or for traffic? This I ask bcos many of folks out there do this for seo ending their site in a pool of links which in most of the cases violates the search engines rules. There are many to this but before I proceed I want some views about seo and traffic.
I might be putting this in my newly established sites discussing it fully.

I really think SEO is the way to go. Most people with a computer use search engines to find sites they even know the name of. Like typing x10hosting into google even when you know its there.

In my opinion, SEO is the way to go
