Always open file with... - Windows 7

I accidentally selected the wrong file to 'always open with with' in windows 7 and it changed EVERYTHING to open with the program i selected. I then went to change it back to another program and then again it changed EVERYTHING to open with the selected program.
Can someone explain why it does this?
Also how can i set it back to default?
    Thanks.!~

have you had a look at the main file types window? Windoze is a bit fuzzy for me at the moment but I believe you get to it by going

my computer (computer)>tools (press Alt on your keyboard if you cannot see the file menu)>folder options.

once there click on the file types tab from there you should be able to edit what does what and when.

If I helped you out then don't forget to give me rep

You changed the File Type Association, which is what causes this to occur. If you go to the Control Panel, pick Programs, choose Default Programs and then pick "Associate a file type or protocol with a program," you can find the file extension that you associated with the program and remove it from there.

Hi, I assume you wanted to open example.avi with VLC media player, so you did right click on example.avi's icon in windows explorer and clicked on properties and then clicked on open with option, there was a checkbox already ticked along with note always open with this, so when you selected VLC media player and pressed ok, it became the permanent player of avi files. Now problem is that how to change it back?

I feel you have guessed what to do now and why it happened accidently?
If you aren't getting any success then use cCleaner (search @ google).

If the above suggestions do not work, you can do it per-file by the following:
    1) Right click a file of the type you want to change
    2) 'Open with' >>> 'Choose default program...'
    3) Select the program you want to open it with
    4) Tick the tick box near the bottom that says "Always use the selected program..." if not already ticked
    5) Click ok
This should change the icons and associations for that file type
