    Must Have Programs on the Computer

    Anyone got any must have programs? Here are a list of some of mine:

    GIMP
    Paint.NET
    Avast Anti-V Scanner
    CCleaner
    Fences - Organizes your desktop
    Object Dock - A mockup of the dock on MAC
    Chrome
    Disby - IM client/Email
    COMODO firewall

    Recently my hard disk's sata power port got damaged, so it was replaced by Samsung.Unfortunately I lost data on it.So this is the list of my must have softwares I downloaded & installed as soon as I got new hard disk.

    Free download manager
    VLC media player
    Utorrent
    Open office
    GIMP
    Empathy mail & messenger client
    Netspeed applet in ubuntu
    Mozilla firefox
    As a web developer I installed
    httpd (apache)
    php
    mysql
    pureftpd/filezilla ftp server
    hmail

    Adobe Reader
    Photoshop
    Audacity
    Office
    Filezilla
    Thunderbird
    Mirc
    trillian
    xfire
    rivatools
    imgburn
    7zip
    visual studio 2010 and 2008 (XNA 3.1 only works with 2008 at the moment)
    Notepad++
    VLC
    XPadder

    And then the games. This is my critical list.

    Honestly most's not "required" to have but they're the first ones I install whenever I kill the OS for a cleanout

    There's only a few I really need that don't come pre-installed:
    XCode (Development Environment)
    CornerStone (SVN)
    Flow (FTP/SFTP)
    Sequel Pro (SQL)
    Espresso (Web Design)
    DropBox (Quick File Sync Tool)
    Colloquy (IRC)
    Plus all the various browsers that are needed for any testing and sometimes a custom compile of Apache/PHP/MySQL, depending on the computer in use.

    If I ever reinstall my operating system (Windows 7 64-bit), after updating it and installing the latest drivers here is what I will install.

    Panda Cloud AV/Avast! Antivirus Free Edition
    MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
    Steam
    Trillian
    NVIDIA Control Panel with nTune
    Audacity
    GIMP
    Mozilla Firefox (no extra add-ons besides Flash, Java and Silverlight)
    Any games which I had installed previously
    Oracle VirtualBox
    FoxIt PDF Viewer or Adobe Reader.
    PuTTY Standalone Client

    I can't help noticing a big hole in these lists -- a good backup/recovery/duplication utility. Acronis True Image Home has saved my butt on a number of occasions over the years. Save money anywhere else you want to, but do yourself the biggest favour ever and buy a good backup utility. (And no, the one that came with your OS -- you know, the one that put the backup on the same disk that just hard-crashed and is unrecoverable -- is not a "good backup utility".)
