    Dell XPS Monitor Display Issue

My friend gave me his XPS machine (I'm pretty sure it is a XPS 710) and said if I could fix it i could have it
Anyways... It turns on and everything but when i try connected my monitor to it i get an error saying check your signal on the Monitor.

The serial of the Dell motherboard is CB-OUY253-13740-6AU-002I and I'm *guessing* the graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX5700 (the name isn't displayed on the graphics card I just searched Google for a matching image)
Also please note that I'm using a DVI-I Male to VGA Female Video Adapter for my monitor to connect to the graphics card.
Is anyone able to assist at all?
    Thanks.

I've tried on a different monitor and still the same thing. That is the same problem my friend was having also.

Do you think it will be the graphics card that is causing the issue?
    Maybe died?

If the graphics aren't working, I would assume the first thing to check would definitely be the graphics card. Have you tried removing and reseating it and ensuring that all required power connections are in? If you have another desktop, try switching the graphics cards over and repeat the tests. If it boots and displays then you know you have a knackered graphics card.

Considering this is a DVI card, if you were using a DVI adapter and monitor to the card I would have had to say something was wrong with the handshaking of the card with the DVI link (such as the monitor not being identified, thus the graphics card will not enable the video out, silly HDCP nonsense), but since you are using a DVI to VGA adapter, the handshaking is all but ruled out now. You'll have to try the graphics card on another PC with the correct power supply, and see if you can try it on a DVI Monitor. If it fails to work still, the card is most likely dead.

Keep in mind, newer graphics cards and the higher end cards require power from the PSU to run; they will not run off of the motherboard's power. Make sure you connect the correct power adapter since the 5700 needs one.

Why not upgrade to a Nvidia 9 series or GTX
