Even though I know this is going to get me hammered hard, I'd like to point out that the "template" thing has been built into Lotus Notes (we call it "stationery" in the Notes world, which is different from the background-plus-font thing in Outlook) since... well, it was there in '93 and it's still there. And that just about any user who can walk and chew gum at the same time could integrate one-click custom messaging from inside a (what sounds like) customer relations application, getting all of that data automatically -- even if they were the only person in the whole company that needed the functionality and the IT crew told him/her where to stick their request -- were it a Notes app. Here endeth the rant (we Notes people don't often get a chance to say "see, your mail client sucks eggs too AND it's only a mail client").
That being said, take a look at this. I don't know about hotkey binding, but this should save you some work.
