    Computer Buying Time

I'm getting ready to buy a new computer from Dell.com (The new studio Dell 8300), and no, don't want to build my own even though it might be cheaper. My thought has always been to make the purchase in the fall months (specificity October/November). Is this a good asumption of when to make any computer purchases? I thought I'd ask here.

I'd honestly take a look at newegg this weekend. They're having their Independence Day Sale, and they have freaking amazing deals. I bought all my desktop parts (when i built my desktop) on their memorial day sale, and got everything (including a monitor) for $830. Great deals - and they have pre-built computers, so you don't "have" to build it - though i highly recommend building your own as, while you may not save money, you know exactly what you're putting into the computer, and you get to decide.

Here's a link to the sale page.

I would stay away from Dell. I was an Electronic Engineer for DELL and I can safely tell you that they purposely sabotage their systems, esp the Memory. I would suggest going with any company but them. Oh an do not buy from Wal-Mart either, the electronics they sell are electronics that have faulty electronics in them and the company cant sell them normally so they sell them to Wal-Mart cheep

I've never really had a lot of faith in PCs sold at stores such as Wal-Mart. Running CPUID on them often reveals decent quality parts but the PSU they put in those things are another story. Cheap things that need replacement if you're doing anything more than adding another drive or adding some RAM, that don't spit out clean power and also fry the crap out of everything if the PSU dies. Can you elaborate a bit on how Dell sabotages their RAM design, though? I've got a bunch of Dells here dating from 6 months old to the late 90s here and they have never had issues with memory. I've got 15+ PCs in my home, and the 6 Dells I have are pretty much all hand me down PCs with the exception of two of them, which we bought for cheap and are laptops. The rest of my PCs (not including my router) are desktops I've built myself.

Honestly I'd be a bit more concerned about USED ultra-thin laptops running AMD/NVIDIA combinations (if they are still around) than I would be by the brand at the moment. HP especially had a bad run for notebooks back in the days of the GeForce 7300Ms being standard. Those laptops without almost immediate attention would have died within a year from heat issues.

I know Dell under rates their power supply units, but what about HP?

For example, I customized a HP Pavilion HPE H8XT with a 600w PSU just because I'm a bit paranoid about having a good PSU.

HP has a habit of providing faulty hardware in my experience. I lost an HP laptop to a melted video card, and I've had to replace the cord to my current laptop twice now. (It'll be three times whenever I get the money to buy yet another cord.)

The HP I mentioned is a desktop... not sure if that would make a difference or not.

I have never had much luck with laptops anyways. Lol. Plus the burned legs doesn't help either.
