    Help with OpenGL please

I can't confirm my hypothesis, so I will ask here.

My laptop seems to NOT have OpenGL. I have determined this by having several apps(mainly from Linux) tell me that certain things can not run(mainly visual stuff) because of something with OpenGL.

I am figuring this laptop does have have OpenGL on it, and I want to say I say a message actually that stated this.... can't remember though.

And I know OpenGL is NOT an app or anything like that(OpenGL = Open Graphics Library(an open source alternative to DirectX)). But is it possible to install OpenGL on to a PC? Possibly something that can be done so my computer can work with OpenGL apps correctly?

DirectX can be installed and updated, so can this be done for OpenGL?

If so, I would love to know how and where. There are a couple of nice features I would like to get my hands on, but need OpenGL....

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

Can no one offer a bit of help here?

My laptop has a SiS M760GX graphics card. As far as I know the driver is the latest version. Supposedly OpenGL should already be installed(the drivers) and so it should be supported and work.

Does anyone know of a method where you can test if you have OpenGL installed properly or anything like that? It is just that OpenGL seems to be on my laptop, but I have trouble with the OpenGL apps(they don't run, and the few that ever have don't display properly).

Mainly I want to run Beryl on my laptop(requires OpenGL) and when started up, I get a message about how it isn't supported and it has something to do with OpenGL.

Maybe there is an update I can apply? Anyone?

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

The SiS M760GX is a crap graphics card that only supports DX6/7 and doesn't even do that well.

The card has NO support for Hardware accelerated OpenGL.

Your only hope for salvation would be to buy the premium SIS linux drivers from http://www.winischhofer.net/ and use software emulation for OpenGL.

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

Hey, Slothie, could you help me a bit more? Basically, I can get the driver(sis_drv.o), but what do I do with this file? basically, where do I go from here?

You mention software emulation for OpenGL. Is this something like a virtual PC? I guess really I need to install this new driver, but of course I don't know how, and guess you mention software emulation for OpenGL b/c this is a linux driver.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

Did you get the premium version, the other versions don't have SW emulation for OpenGL so it'll be useless

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

I can get the premium version, but I would like to know what I'll be doing first. I don't want to pay for something and then end up not knowing what to do or doing it wrong.

Does that come with something else that will help me?

    Re: Help with OpenGL please

ehhh... i have to spread some more rep before giving you some for that(now i gotta find some useful post....). don't worry, i'll get to that soon.

Yea though, probably not going to do all that, it is late and I am tired so that looks like a novel to me(and I hate reading). I'm sure it actually isn't that complicated, especially in comparison to things I've done on Linux before.

The laptop is essentially crap now anyways as the sound card is fried(hardware mess up) and the graphics card is pretty shoddy itself and since the processor isn't top notch it just isn't worth it to get something like that working a little better. Ehh.... I'll get a new one, eventually(and no more SiS )
