Connect a laptop HD to a PC???

Alright, after hours of attempts(spread out over days) to fix a silly filesystem problem, I have come to my final conclusions.

I need to connect my laptops Hard Drive to another computer and scan that HD for errors and fix all of them. This can be done much better from Windows than it can from bootable disc that I have tried. Since Windows will not load from that Hard Drive(because of the filesystem errors), I simply need to correct them from an already running Windows filesystem.

So, I'm sure if you've read this far you know that laptop hard drives are smaller and do not have the same connections as a full sized hard drive. I assume that a normal PC does not have built in cables that can connect such a small hard drive to the PC.

Any ideas where I could get a cable to do such a thing? Maybe some hardware that will connect the two?

there are laptop HD shells that can be plugged into 2 USB ports of your computer, and act as an external harddrive..
if that is what you are looking for.

I own a MADz'D, I bought it in HK and can't find it on any internet supplier though.

Actually, that would work brilliantly if I could find it in a store.

Do you have any idea where I could find one somewhere in the U.S.?

mmm you could create a Network Drive.....
can you log in to windows? (or the error is on the booting part?)

anyway if you can.... plug an ethernet cable to your laptop connect it with your pc...

and then searh google for more steps (setting ip of your laptop to our pc Windows Explorer and Maping your Network drive)

of course all the above are asuming that you can logon to windows

Re: Connect a laptop HD to a PC???

damian, the error is on the boot. I am certain it was in the filesystem. When I used a linux live CD I can use gParted to see that there are filesystem errors, and i believe this is what is preventing the boot.

Anyways, I got my Acronis boot CD to work with my usb HD so I made a back up of everything.

The only problem I have now is restoring any information. I had two backups prior to this one I just made. When I restore either, windows will no longer boot. This is odd since I have used these backups before and they worked 100% error free.... I used the factory restore CDs to get my laptop working again, but as for getting my data back, I'll have to figure out why the backups will not work anymore...

Better yet, get a portable Anti virus, and utility set (Portableapps.com) stuff it on a USB and just do it on your laptop.

and for about 60$ you can get Ceedo with Argo, which lets you install your defrag programs onto your USB for the same purpose, except instead limited by whats free and portable. this lets you use your programs already, just use the install file they come with

    thats my favorite investment

Well, Laos101, while I am currently not seeing how this will get my backups to work, I will admit that I am very thankful for your post. This is a new discovery for me and I will definitely have fun getting into it and playing around with all the capabilities.

Any halfway decent tech store should have the USB caddies. Best Buy, Circuit City, Frys, RadioShack, office depot, staples, etc.
