    Ubuntu 6.06 Help

I have installed this OS on my computer recently and could use some assistance from those that may understand how to configure it.

Just the basic ( or advanced, which ever would give the most out of it ) configurating.
I am also trying to install Open Office and a few other programs.

Anyone out in x10 land be able to assist? Or, if perferred, help me figure out how to download and install another unix OS instead?

    Thanks bunches!

Why 6.06? 7.10 is newer and already has OpenOffice installed.

I might help with you. I think you've installed Dapper Drake, I've got Feisty Fawn. It's 7.10, and it comes preinstalled with OpenOffice.

6.06 is the LTS version though (Long term Support)... there is absolutely nothing wrong with this version... its 100% compatible with the latest Debian Packages and all around more solid than 7.10... new LTS should be released though this spring

Because at the time, that is what I had on CD that I got from a friend. My computer had pretty much crashed and to reinstall windows, I needed one CD that seems to have gone missing. So, when a friend got home from out of town, I asked them what software they had. They offered me this on CD.
I tried using the update manager thing, but it won't update anymore. I'd be happy to have the newest version.

GamingX -> Okay, not sure how you will be able to help, but if you want to. Like I said above, even if it requires me to change OSes, as long as someone can help me get it setup and configured properly.

    Re: Ubuntu 6.06 Help

the update manager only gets the latest version of whats already installed...
you may need to enable the universe repository to get things installed that you want...

if you goto system administration there is a gui for the apt repositories... symantic will allow you to add software the way my previous post says to from the command line but with a nice gui and you can enable other repositories from software sources... ubuntu is by far the easiest linux distro and is very well documented... I wouldn't change unless you want to dig deep into the OS

That would be helpful if it actually did. I tried, said :
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So, if there is a different way to do it. Or a way to download Fedora and then burn it onto a CD and turn around and use that to install, I'd be greatful for the help.

I'm just not really liking Ubuntu really ... ( not real impressed with *nix in general - too many years of a DOS / Windows kid I guess ) ... but any help in installing Fedora instead would be great.

You install Fedora the same way as you would for Ubuntu. But I don't know why you would want to switch to Fedora. Ubuntu is much more closer to Windows than Fedora is. Well if you want to do it, here's a download link for Fedora 8 http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora. If you configure Ubuntu right, it works a bit like Vista.

    Re: Ubuntu 6.06 Help

you have an LTS version of ubuntu that dist upgrade won't upgrade unless there is anew LTS... its not scheduled till this spring... it will upgrade an non LTS to non LTS and LTS to LTS only....

just download install the 7.10 desktop version... it sounds like thats what you want...
Fedora sux... it has config files stored in non-standard locations etc...

if you need something to burn the iso... there are command line ones... the best linux gui is k3b...
to install from the shell just
    sudo apt-get install k3b

you may need to add the uniniverse repository in software sources and do
    apt-cache update
    Edit:
btw if anybody doesn't have a burner and wants to install debain from windows try this website...
