I am looking to setup my own server for a upcoming website project

As the target traffic is India

so how much would it cost to setup a server a maintain it

Just want an idea before going ahead

Well, it all depends on what you get. First thing's first, at least get a server in India since putting it in a nearby location will make sure things run fast. If you get a dedicated server, they usually come with plans where you can adjust your bandwidth, disk space, and internet connectivity speed, along with what software you can get with it.

Do you mean get a dedicated server hosted by a company, or host your own server at home?

If your hosting your own server (at home) then you need a fast internet, and they dont come cheap (Ive no idea on the prices in India though). The server itself will cost a fair bit to start with (depending on what spec you go for), but after that you just have to pay for electric, internet and the maintenance, which could be anything from new fans every now and again to replacing hard drives occassionally. But if you get a decent server to start with, the maintenance costs will be less afterwards.

Probably the cheapest way would be to get one of x10's VPSs. It depends whether you mind it being hosted in the US though. The good thing about a VPS over your own server (At home) is that you won't have to look after the hardware.
