    P4 Prescott Overheating

    I have a Dual-CPU Pentium 4 530 3.00GhZ Prescott 775-Pin (E3000)pprocessor (no overclock), in a AsRock 775i65G board.
It keeps overheating - just now it hit 98C (208.4F) before shutting off. I've already tested all the parts in another computer, except for the motherboard and PSU (20pin ATX rather than 24pin). I know it's not either, because I've had them less than six months.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: By the way, I forgot to mention - this is the idle temperature. Even if I could keep it on long enough to load it, I wouldn't.

    How long does it last?

Make sure the HSF has good contact with the heatspreader on top of the chip and that there is a good layer of TIM.

If it seems loose, check the retention pins - if its the stock HSF - they are incredibly fiddly (well, for me at least)

Your best bet would be to get something like the Freezer 7 Pro - which is still great value.

Did you install the processor yourself? You might want to check on that thermal paste..

Is your CPU fan broken or something?

I'm betting the thermal base or the TIM, whatever you used has gone and you need to reapply it to the CPU. Also, what speed is the fan spinning at?

I'm guessing the CPU heatsink fan is broken. You'll need to check this by opening up the case, turing on the computer and checking to see if at least the fan is functioning.

As the other guys are saying, if that's not the case, check the thermal paste placed between the CPU heatsink and CPU, you may need to replace it with a fresh batch of paste.

It's the board. Just tested the power supply. Temporarily solved the problem by underclocking it 80%. I just got a new board, and soon as I get a HSF that fits in it, I'll use that.
