    Failing Hard Drive

I put in a hard drive from my older computer, it's a old 74.5 western digital hard drive. I plugged it in to my Gateway computer, and I can hear it crashing. Temps get at 42 to 30 degrees Celsius. When I need it to work, it restarts. I don't think that's good for the HDD, any ideas?

    Re: Failing Hard Drive

I've had to replaced failed hard drives in people's computers before. They weren't too happy when they heard that the drive was done with and their data was lost. If it sounds like something banging inside of the drive, it's certainly time to replace it. Since it still works, don't use it, get another drive and pull your data off of the failing drive.

Well, I thought it might be an incompatibility with this computer. When it was in my old Emachine (*curses preassembled computers*), it worked fine. I had one failure which was fixed with a format a while ago. I would like a to use it for some extra space, until I give my old one to a friend.

Any hard drive should work with it just as long as it's fairly new or is new, regardless if it is a pre-built or not. If you're using an old Parallel port instead of a SATA port for the drive, the worst that could happen is that you need to find what jumper the drive needs to be set to in order to work. It's just a little thing on the back of the hard drive that you have to move around to the proper position. You'll know if that needs to be moved if the BIOS setup utility doesn't detect the drive.

    Re: Failing Hard Drive

Twinkie, if your hard drive is making noises like that, then the problem is with the drive, not with the computer. When that happens, you usually have no more than 10 hours of use from it. I would reccomend buying a new drive, and pulling your important data off of that drive ASAP. If you need more information, I've found this site helpful: [http://www.hard-drive-help.com/]. The admin seems to be knowledgeable and has a contact page on the site which I have used to get one of my problems succesfully fixed before.

Hope you don't lose your data!

    Re: Failing Hard Drive

It might have got damaged during the change over. I have had a two hard drives fail before (not a good experience) but if you lost any data itheir is some really nice recovery software i found that is "free". Not too sure what you can try. Incompatibilities with hard drives are almost un heard of. Try cheching the jumper settings but if it rens hot then it is most likely damaged.
