speakers don't work

AMD laptop and it's a pail of fail. My laptop speakers don't work. It's a major pain in the ass. Since this was a refurb and HP wants a fortune to fix the sum*****, I'm now looking at a replacement. I've been shopping around and now I need some advice. I want a laptop to play around on the Intertubes and play music/movies and of course , run all the cool Stardock ****. I've been looking @ some 4GB Vista 64 bit models.

You said a refurb ( new hardware right) try checking if your drivers for your sound card are properly installed,

How old is the laptop in the first place? You checked to make sure that there is no hardware switch for the speakers, right? And you tried updating the sound drivers as well?

Usually it's a driver issue, try installing older sound drivers, it worked for me once, play with your audio output configuration in winamp or VLC

ever tried to look if the driver works on the Device Manager? Trust me, that tool tells alot ;)
