    Question Access to Site Software, interested in hostng a forum and oekaki

    Hey, I'm very new to using a real web host- I've used Freewebs before but x10 trumps it by a mile. I was watching the video tutorials and saw the one about accessing SIte SOftware. I saw forums on there, which is something I would love to have. However, looking at my current cPanel, I don't see an option for that. Do I need to upgrade my account to access that?

    Also I would like to host an oekaki. I have a link to the Ninechime program to download. Is it possible I could get it as a subdomain here?

    Thanks for any help!

    (and my apologies if this is in the wrong post section D: )

    I have an idea ZapZack.

    Why don't you actually answer the question rather than linking them to the search feature...

    Topic Poster:

    Are you speaking of Fantastico? If you are, I'd strongly recommend just downloading the actual software (whether it be PHPbb3, SMF, etc) and installing it yourself, you can save yourself a lot of database space.

    Most forum systems have instructions on how to install them.

    As for oekaki, I'm not sure what it is, care to enlighten me?

    I think it's more useful to have the user search before they post..

    You and I both know that will not work. No user is going to search. They'll say they searched, but couldn't find anything. You can't change things like that, people don't change, and won't change.

    They'll take the easy way out, and when you figure that out, you just answer their question, even if it seems meaningless to you.

    Thanks for answering my question well, leafy. My apologies to both of you, I honestly did search but didn't find any threads that answered my question much, if at all. I guess that's my lame excuse, but it's true.

    Leafy- I like to compare oekakis to forums. An oekaki is kind of similar to a forum, but instead of posting threads you post pictures. People can comment on thsoe pictures. The oekaki provides different applets to draw in such as PainBBS, SHipainter, and ChibiPaint. It's been said that the applets have some of the features of Photoshop (granted not all features, but a surprisingly good amount). Check some oekais out at OekakiArt and oekakiCentral.

    I think both zapzack & leafypiggy are making good points.

    Whilst this new "make them use search" link is a great tool, it is important not to over-use it. We don't want to put off new members, by giving them unfriendly responses when they're not really called for. I only envision this tool being used when the original poster of the question is being blatantly lazy, should know better, or when their question/answer is long & complex & has only just been answered earlier in the day on another thread (this happens all the time!)

    On the other hand, it is actually a rule of the forum that members must Search before posting ;

    http://forums.x10hosting.com/news-an...mandments.html

    ...see rule #3.

    So people are within their rights to ask the poster to use Search, especially when they know that the question has been answered many times before. When I ask people to search, rather than just answer their question myself for them, it is usually based on this time-honoured proverb ;

    “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”

    I see what you mean, zen Sorry if my actions earlier were wrong; The fault here is mine. Thanks for answering my questions though, and I'm sure this'll be easier once I get more familiar with this site!

    again, I looked at the search results, and I couldn't find anything that was remotely related. if i did, I wouldn't have said anything.

    I agree with the 'search before posting', but like you said. It shouldn't be overused, nor is it always applicable.
