Please up my max connections

I'm having some problems with sql errors saying

SQL Error:1040 - Too many connectionsQuery:[READ] Unable to connect to MySQL server.

I have been told that my max connections needs to be higher for these errors to stop.

You're not the only person that has this problem, I have problems with phpmyadmin and my apps.
My server is chopin, but i think there is a server alert of a hadware update.
