Any .php file should have permissions set to 0644 and subdirectories set to 0755
Any .htaccess file that uses mod_rewrite should use the line
RewriteBase /
at the top, above any RewriteRule
Are you using a CMS like Joomla or WordPress or a PHP based forum script?
Sometimes turning on the 'SEO friendly urls' will make changes in .htaccess that will cause the error.
Nothing is always absolutely so.
I'm using index.htm with this content:
Only this file with 644 permissions<h1>IT WORKS!</h1>![]()
You should try the other suggestion that descalzo mentioned about .htaccess files. If you don't understand what you need to do, you can post the contents of this file here. A HTML page won't generate a 500 error on it's own, so there must be a problem before the index.htm file, which .htaccess is.
