PHP mail() not working or something else?

Basically that is my question - what happened with the php mail function last week or more probably. The form on my site is working 100%. It is the same form and the code is not changed a long time ago. Before that problem started everything was ok. Now some emails arrive after hours/days and most doesn't arrive at all. Will it be because I am using the free hosting (I know nothing can be guaranteed, just want to know the reason and what actions to take)? Can we (users) go around that problem somehow? I've checked that most of the recent threads with the same problem are just ignored/no answer. I am not posting another one just to spam the forum, I just ask for an answer if it will satisfy even all of the threads. I also noticed that some of the illuminated accounts are affected, which actually make me think that the problem is affecting all the servers. I can be wrong, of course.

The main issue is that only a few admins have access to the stuff that deals with mail delivery.
The reason the threads are left unanswered is that this forum is almost entirely community driven and we don't always have an answer or know if the issue is being handled.
I do know that higher ups have been alerted but the few admins that can handle it also do paid stuff, which takes priority.

Thank you for your answer. I am not in hurry. I just wanted to know if it is something temporary or the feature has been removed - nothing more.
