PHP variable

Hello,
I used this php variable, $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] , on my website. First time I tryed it work but since some days I just saw that it don't work. I try to display the value and the variable is empty. So my question is: Is that normal or is it a recent issue caused by an update ?

Oh, ok I didn't know that this variable was not always set. I tried on google chrome and it works so it seems that the new version of firefox (5.0) don't asign any value for this variable.
