Files get cut off on FTP - is this a joke?

Site is online. I have been attempting to upload our specification file for public review. But it seems that the FTP you folks are running is seriously flawed.

I cannot get more than 100MB uploaded before I get a

Transfer Failed! message. This happens over and over. I left it running for hours on auto-retry, and it just won't work. The specification file for review is around 648GB. I will split the file into 100MB partitions if the FTP issue is not solved.

Did I read that right that it's 648GB? If the spec file is -that- big, I HIGHLY doubt it'd be allowed as that's way beyond what anyone can call "regular usage."

The spec file is indeed that size. I read through the entire TOS, and my site is not in violation whatsoever. Unmetered bandwidth and diskspace mean exactly that.

Notwithstanding your concerns, I wasn't even able to get 100 *megabytes* uploaded to the server, that is the issue at hand.

What is going on server-side to cause so many interruptions to my upload conveniently right at the 100MB mark? I was only able to resume uploading *sometimes* so, it is curious.

That's from the admins themselves; they're quoting the File Hosting section of the TOS, which I agree with in this case due to the sheer size of the file (it's an absolutely -massive- chunk of disk for one account). Id venture to bet you'd need a dedicated server for a file of that size - not even the dedicated VPS's we offer could hold a file that large.

As for the 100mb cap, it's in place for abuse near as I can tell.



Edit: We've done more discussing on this, it is physically impossible to serve a 648GB file over http due to timeouts and the sheer time required (6.144 days to upload at 1.25MB/sec (roughly a 10 meg connection) or download). There's no way this would fly in any way shape or form. I do apologize for that, but frankly a Dedicated Server where you can actually buy a 1TB drive to store that on is your best option.

Thank you very much for you reply! That makes plenty of sense w/ the timeouts and all. I have read your TOS extensively, and have chosen your host for precisely that reason. Therefore, I will be splitting the spec file into 50MB files and uploading it.

I will report back if there are any difficulties with that.

That doesn't apply to my website. My website is needs a web host, not a file host. That distinction makes absolutely no sense because a website requires files. While I appreciate the distinction for abuse purposes -- my website does not abuse the host.

Again, unmetered bandwidth and unmetered disk space means exactly that. I will be using it to host the website. The data files being hosted are a part of that site.

Ticket will be closed shortly, but I figured I'd give you one last warning since I'm in a halfway decent mood for the moment.

You have received a message forwarded via me direct from the CEO of x10hosting. What you are doing would be considered File Hosting as per the TOS. Due to the size of the file in question, it would be considered against the TOS no matter how many smaller chunks you choose to divide it into.

Should I see that the specification file is being uploaded, despite that you have been warned, account access will be revoked in accordance with sections 1, 6, and 8 of the TOS with no possibility for backups.

The best advice I can give is to purchase a dedicated server, or utilize a service such as Rapidshare, however you may find that such free file hosting services have a disk space limit as well.


The fact is, what you are intending to do is -not- what a free WEBSITE hosting service can handle. We're here to host websites, not 648gb specification files.
