FTP server writing zero length files

"Error-226 unable to write to file"

When uploading via the FTP server it just writes a zero length file over the original file.

Also getting message:

"550 eiger_sanction_foto_1974_zion_canyon_mike_hoover_A A_01_01a.jpg: Disk quota exceeded"

I did not realise this was happening so I have uploaded new .updated HTML files for my site, which the FTP server wrote as zero length. Result is all the .JPGs are there but there .HTML has been wiped out = no website -> lots of irritated people out there. This has been going on for three days. I have done an emergency deletion of the less used .JPGs to see if I could free up space (even though there is no limit on the disk space) so that I could upload some .HTML and get the site moving again, but it still will not allow upload.

What do I do ? TIA for any help

Have you tried doing some "tidying" using the cPanel file manager? I also suggest you find a new FTP client.

I have tidied using FileZilla then in desperation deleted less trafficked pages.

The FTP function in FileZilla returns the same results.

Can you give me a link to cpanel file manager ? I could not find it.

Day five now. My web page was not down for this one when the last webhost just went out of business.

It must be a problem with the FTP server or the web server because my other sites are fine. I am uploading to one via FTP function on Adobe Dreamweaver right now.

It looks as though you have exceeded your 500MB disk quota. You'll need to delete some files, which should resolve the zero length issue.
Also, you are not yet eligible for the unmetered upgrade, as you do not have a valid website uploaded to your account, which is required within one week as per the Terms of Service.

Hi - thanks for this. I can see it now. But it appears that I have "exceeded the disk quota"

I shortlisted freewebhosts with unlimited disk space because my site has a lot of images. Is there actually a max disk quota for a website ?

I am going to delete less important files and get the .html files back up before every one thinks the webpage has died.

Hello: My entire website was working fine until a few days ago. It was up within a few hours of starting the account on 2011-09-30 . It only stopped working a few days ago on 2011-OCT-05 There is a "webhost notes" page on my site which details all this, off the "new material" page.

///Update: I have just killed all the less trafficed .JPGs in order to be able to upload the full-length .HTML pages and replace the zero length .HTML pages which the FTP server had overwritten with them.///

It would be useful if the FTP server did not overwrite zero length files when the disk quote was exceeded and just bounced the connection. At least an unupdated site would be better than no site at all.

Seeing as you've now got a website up, I've upgraded your account to the standard "unmetered" package. Please bear in mind that photo galleries are allowed to be a maximum of 1GB.
