ssl to google.com not working

I try to use the google API via the Zendworks Gdata library to write stuff to my google docs from my website. However when I connect, I get this error:

Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Gdata_App_HttpException' with
message 'Unable to Connect to ssl://www.google.com:443. Error #: ' in
/home/mayasl/public_html/GGA/ZendGdata-1.11.11/library/Zend/Gdata/ClientLogin.php:141

I have read other threads about it, but never saw a reply. Is it possible to do this from a free hosting or not?

edit: I can connect from a different host or from my pc, so it's not my code.
