uploading files

Hi,
I have a question. I uploaded my files to the public_html folder but when i go to the url there is nothing there. I am using an ftp program and it would appear that the public_html folder must be the folder to upload files to. Does anyone one know why the webpage are not showing? Am I uploading to a wrong folder or directory?
