Just get as many links to your site as possible.

DON'T spam other peoples websites. Sure, put a link in your sig and join lotsa sites, but DON'T just post about your website. That behaviour would most likely get you banned and the links deleted.

Depends, there is no one answer that works for all web sites. Often overlooked in the Google help files is the phrase "Interesting & Relevent content" .

The Cybrax website for instance reached the number one position in four weeks using any one of several search terms without a single backlink because there was nobody else doing PC repair and web workin the same town. That's the relevant bit in action.

If on the other hand your content is more common.. say clipart then yes you are going to need back links and lots of them before the search engines see that you are popular and take notice. The quality of the link is also important.

Signature tags for instance are a common site in forums but better still are back links added by somebody else such as the webmaster of another site in their links are like gold as these represent a more genuine seal of approval for your content. What makes another site link to yours, well that's the interesting content bit.

With so much plagerism (copying somebody elses work and passing it off as yours) across the web unique content is rare, if you have it then the search engines will reward you.

Try making an SEO Friendly website with H1 tags, a good meta description, and lots of interesting content.

And be sure to practice White Hat SEO, not Black Hat SEO. Do not participate in link farms or anything like that. Link exchange only with sites that have relevant content (like a tech site link exchanging with another tech site).

I have similar experience to Cybrax in that I have very few backlinks on any of my websites, (there are some unsolicited backlinks), yet my websites consistently show very near or at the top of Google search when relevant search words and phrases are entered. Without going into a lot of detail, this is because of relevant, (in some cases unique), content. With so many websites about so many subjects available on the Internet, interesting, relevant or unique content can be a very challenging goal so, as mentioned by others, good quality links and meta tags are something to concentrate on for SEO.

They are actually detrimental to your position in Google's search results, be careful when submitting your URL to mass URL databases.
