Question Greetings, I am an absolute n00b.

Hi all, my name is Alex. I'm trying to teach myself how to do web design and development... it's been a fun process. Currently I'm tackling PHP... I've been trying to figure out how to get it to parse correctly in the x10 cPanel, but so far no luck. My HTML isn't even showing up correctly, even though I know my tags are right. So far I've just created some test pages off of the public directory... it's frustrating because I know I have good code, why won't it parse? Is there something else I need to do? I'm creating documents with .php extensions, and when I view them they even say "PHP document", but it's all just sort of there.

The HTML editor is impossibly frustrating as well. I tried to see if I could even get that to work, and it apparently only works like a rich text editor. None of my tags would work! Grrr! What's doubly frustrating is I've used cPanel before to maintain the website for where I work; I can modify code all day and it's fine. But somehow creating raw code is not working!

Can anyone give me suggestions as to how to get it to work? Or good resources on learning beginner's PHP or XML? Google has turned up some useful resources, but I'd like to know if there's one that's better than the others.

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to becoming an active member of this community.
    -Alex

    Hello,

You may be best using something like Notepad++ to develop scripts locally with some kind of XAMPP style setup, then uploading them to the server. cPanel's file manager isn't really ideal for editing scripts, as it takes a lot of time to make simple adjustments. With a local environment it's as easy as switching between the editor and your web browser.
Anyways, welcome to x10! If you need any help, feel free to join us on IRC, or open a support ticket.

    Thanks.

Thank you! I'm learning so much right now and I feel like my brain is about to melt out of my face. :-P But it's a lot of fun for sure.

I remember using Notepad++ for script development a couple of years ago at a job... they had a system to parse the code and I'm wonder what that would be? Basically, how do I get it from just code to actually *be* something? Or do something? Unfortunately at this job, they just said "here's how you write code, now click this", without teaching me what "this" was. So the code part is pretty simple for me... it's just getting it to do something that I'm stuck on. Heh.

Thanks again; I'll be sure to check out IRC and open up a support ticket when I better understand what it is I'm even asking for.
