phpbb has some nicer mods
I'm using a pre-modded version.

With all the version changes lately with SMF it does screw things up a bit but I am sure SMF has alot better mods. Of course if you are using a premodded version of phpbb then I guess your all set. Good luck, I hope you find the help you need. I have never converted a SMF forum to phpbb so I would be no help, sorry.

Maybe its possible to reverse-engineer the PHPBB 2.0 -> SMF converter...
You can try this, but be sure to back up all data because i'm not sure that it works:

The converter from phpbb worked! Had to delete some files and now it's working. Thanks for the suggestions. Do you want the points?
