Are the pumpkin carving patterns allowed? Because that seems like cheating to me. If you aren't able to buy a pumpkin carving pattern then you would be a disadvantage because other people would.

It seems to me that anyone with a computer and a printer (or a pencil and a piece of paper -- or, heck, even just a pencil) would have the same "cheat" available to them. If you want to do the photorealistic thing, just posterize an image and trace that onto the pumpkin (using transfer/carbon paper or pouncing through pinholes in the picture).

If you've got a printer and Google, you've got pumpkin patterns
If you don't have a printer, it'll be a bit trickier but it -is- still possible to hand-sketch one based off an image you've seen, just as Essellar pointed out.

Would pumpkins that Weren't made with a stencil of some sort get a higher chance of winning since they would be harder to make?
