Vigge's numbers are correct. If you have cable, it's dependent on your signal quality as well as how busy your neighborhood is. With DSL you're more dependent on the distance your line is at. Fiber can run for miles without even seeing a slowdown for signal loss.

Thanks for all of your replies! Now I have an idea of choosing my DSL plan and it will be a wired for more reliable service experience.
It also depends on the server you connect to. A good reliable test is Microsoft's server. They're usually pretty fast. I've had downloads over 2000 kbps on there.
