Is their a __________ in the house ?

Wandering around through the previous posts for web site reviews it is clear that most here are trying to break into the world of web design and was curious what the day job is for some of you. Clearly many are enthusiastic amateurs and most likely still at school or college, others however this is a just a hobby. So what pays the bills for you?

PS: anybody who says 'Google Adsense' will be grilled without mercy lol

Re: Is their a __________ in the house ?

I am in college, doing computer science and engineering.I enjoy investing time here just for my hobby and to increase my knowledge.I have decided to make career in web development and I don't care about the money, it is the skill about which I care. However whatever I am doing I will like to earn money from that :-).As far as bill is concerned x10hosting is free and free non commercial domains are available too and internet for a month costs me only $1.

I'm too young to pay my own bills, but that doesn't stop me earning as a web designer and I also have a paper round

One Dead Crow is a Metal Band out of southern Idaho. Im their manager, and have finally convinced them to take their marketing on the web where their fans can access it better. I am a stay at home mother of 5, own an mmorpg, manage the band, and run my husband's military family readiness group. I have developed several sites for people on x10's free servers and most have migrated over to paid hosting with x10 after their sites are built. Works out great for all of us I believe.

Re: Is their a __________ in the house ?

You mean someone or something is supposed to be paying my bills? Is that, like, a grant program or something I should know about?

On an only slightly more serious note, I wish there was a day job. If programming were a sport, I'd be that sort-of-coach guy that has a place on the squad because he was a good player before he was forced to retire due to injury. Between a stroke and a degenerative brain condition, I don't quite have what it takes to do major projects anymore -- I can't juggle enough balls to keep anything complex together and on track. (It's like I'm outsourcing modules to different Stans who, for political, language or time zone reasons can't or won't talk to one another, and the project manager is an incompetent boob.)

That being said, there's enough left in the ol' cranium that I can be useful in programmer forums (fora), especially over at the IBM Lotus Notes & Domino developerWorks site. (I am, or rather was, something of an expert on that particular platform, especially as it pertains to web development.) That is sometimes a bit discouraging -- I mean, if a broken-down, befuddled old fart like me can take the time to care about the quality of the code I produce, then what's wrong with the up-and-comers? (Look, I know there are people who just want to let the world know about their cats and don't want to code anything. It's not them who get on my nerves -- it's the ones who not only label themselves "developer", but who actually expect to be paid for the, well, droppings they leave behind on the server. Here endeth the rant.)

I spend what time I can working with people who are having a little more trouble coping with life than I am, and have a bit of a reputation as a motivational speaker (but, due to the nature of the work, I'm not going to be making Anthony Robbins money any time soon -- it's usually a free meal).

While I continue to try to convince the concerned authorities that a fellow who can't always walk or talk, and who gets lost on his way to the corner store every once in a while qualifies as "disabled", I have to rely on the pittance that passes for welfare 'round these parts. Ah -- maybe when I get my site under way for real I'll be able to make a few bucks on 99-cent code downloads. I still get a few hundred emails a year asking for code, so maybe there's a market for micropayments. As for Adsense, well, I'm up to very nearly sixty dollars after only four years ;-) Darned AdBlock Plus!!![COLOR="Silver"]
