when someone is banned?

ive noticed that a few members seem to have a strike through on there name on the forum ?
why do people get banned and is it a permanant ban or is it like a temporary ban based on something they have done ?
sorry if it seems a silly question i was just wondering

Many forum infractions can result in a temporary ban. We ban users for spamming to keep our forums clean. I tend to issue permanent bans to all spambots I see.
If users continually don't obey our rules, they can receive a temporary ban or a permanent ban depending on how bad their actions were.

I think that is at the discretion of the moderator depending on how serious they think the infraction is.
