The first 39 digits of Pi suffice for any application imaginable. i.e.: Calculations involving circles the size of the Universe will have an accuracy to the size of a PROTON if Pi is taken to 39 decimal places

• 240 B.C. Archimedes found pi to be between 223/71 and 22/7
• 150 A.D. Ptolemy found pi to be approximately 377/120 (or 3.1416)
• 480 A.D. In China, pi was found to be approximately equal to 355/113 or 3.141592

which is the 3rd month, 14th day or 3.14

The 1983 Guinness Book of World Records lists Rajan Mahadevan as having recited 31,811 places of pi from memory (it doesn't say why he did this ... )

In September 2002, Pi is computed to 1,240,000,000,000 decimal places by Professor Yasumasa Kanada at the University of Tokyo. It took over 400 hours on a Hitachi Supercomputer.

There are people who believe that p contains the answer to the universe, or that information is held in the digits. It has even been suggested it contains the VOICE OF GOD. In Carl Sagan's book 'Contact' the places of p are found to contain a message from the beings that built the universe.

Oh man this just reminded me that I was goin to plug in my old compy and make a dos app to calculate pi till it either finds an end or burns out or maybe eve a power outage.

59-year-old Akira Haraguchi of Japan recently broke the world record for the recited number of digits of Pi. Haraguchi-san recited an amazing 83,431 digits of Pi during a 13-hour overnight stretch. This almost doubles the previous record of 42,195 digits by fellow Japanese Hiroyuki Goto.
