usually you just click on the file name and it opens a download box, unless your using an ftp client then all you should have to do is drag and drop.

If your in the FTP and you see the file you want to download just right click and click somthing that say download then it will ask were you would like to download it to.
Thats what it dose for me with Smart FTP. I have not used any other FTP that I can remember.
No but like the files i have to get are from my friends computer, he says he has some kind of ftp server running and that i can get download his file. His ip adderess seems wrong because he said he is behind a LAN. I am totally confused and dont know if his ip address is his local one. Do all computers in a LAN have a same ip?
Go to start==>accessories==>command prompt. Type this in: ipconfig/all this will give his ip.He should do this not you.

There might be a router between him and the internet and you , If thats the problem he should route a port (21) to his pc on the router.
Because a router gives internet to multiple computers but doesn't know wich traffic goes where they split traffic up in ports. certain program expects his data on a certain port.
So if you route the port from the router to your pc the router knows:
ah this data should go to that pc.
He says he is on a business lan and cannot find the router where is it typically at?
The router usually sits somewhere near the computer.

If he's on a business lan, the router is most likely at or near the "main computer" eg: Main techy guy or manager. Or if there is a server/network the router would be there with the main network hub.
