It really depends on what you want to do with it.
I use Linux because it's 100% customisable. Everything can be changed. Don't like certain things about Linux? Then change them!
I have thought about getting a Mac, because I do quite a bit of creative work (film-editing, 3D modelling, sound creation, etc.), but I've found that there are plenty of good, free programs for Linux (apparently DreamWorks used Maya on Linux for the 3D modeling of Shrek 3). So unless you simply need a particular Mac program, save yourself the expense and get something else.
I personally don't like Windows. It takes too long to boot up, it costs over $100 every time a new version comes out, and I have to upgrade my hardware almost every time because each new version of Windows is more resource-heavy than the last (anyone who's every suffered the horror on Windows Vista surely knows what I'm talking about).
There's also the security issue. Windows is notoriously unsafe compared to Linux (or Mac?). There's also the closed-source issue. You have no idea what your Windows PC is doing behind your back. With Linux you know that the source code has been checked over by thousands of people, as well as being publicly accessible for anyone to look at.
Linux dominates almost all aspects of computing, and is probably one of the most widely-used operating systems. It's used often on mobiles (Android) and PCs (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.); and is used almost exclusively on servers (CentOS, Red Hat Linux, etc.), supercomputers, SBCs, and embedded systems.
In the end, if you don't mind having to fork out $$$ for your OS, and you don't care about whether your OS is transmitting your secret data behind your back, and you don't mind sitting around for over a minute while your PC boots up, and you don't mind not being able to change anything, then Windows or Mac is fine for you.
It's completely up to you, of course. If you're familiar with Windows, then switching to another OS is always a pain - having to unlearn and relearn many things (no right-click on a Mac?). There is a excellent article about this called Linux is Not Windows which - although aimed at new Linux users - is pretty general.
One time where is not a good idea to switch to Linux or Mac is if you're a hardcore (stop giggling, guys!) gamer. Most games are released for Windows, and although the older ones might work on Linux, the newer games probably wont.
I've also heard that if you're a writer you should stick with Windows or Mac, but I've been writing scripts (Celtx) and books (LibreOffice) on Linux for a long time and haven't had any trouble whatsoever.

The term "best" is certainly subjective based on individual preferences. Mac suits my needs best, but another platform may suit your needs better.

Well played, however I wouldn't quickly dismiss Windows like that. Sure there were past problems with Microsoft OS, but if you have ever used Windows 7 you can't deny the fact that it's the best OS Microsoft has produced.
Are you going to so quickly dismiss Linux, when its market share grows and the focus of developing malicious code shifts towards Linux based systems more? Linux isn't 100% secure, neither is Windows or Mac. No OS is 100% secure.
