It's how we know if an account is still being used or not. If we didn't suspend and delete accounts for inactivity, our servers would be filled with stuff that hasn't been touched in months. Having you simply log into the forums once a mont, which takes no more than maybe 5 minutes out of your day, is our way of making sure you're still using your account and it shouldn't be deleted to clear space. This way, there's room for new users to sign up

P.S.: This only applies to the free hosting services. It's rather obvious when a paid hosting service isn't being used - People stop paying for it ;)
