How does school work in your country?

well i well damn know that i can get this on wikipedia or something else but i want to hear the info straight from the people:happysad: Like how may years and levels before you reach college(well i'm pretty sure that college works the same throughout the rest of the world... please correct me if i'm wrong though :p)

Well since i started the thread, I'll also start off :P

Pre-K (my slang for pre-school): Usually 3 years (been there done that:D)
Elem: 6 years Grade 1-6(been there done that:D)
HighSchool: 4 years 1st - 4th year (I'm currently on 2nd Year:laugh

Here in Australia there are similarities, but also some differences:

Pre-School: Usually done when you are 4-5 years old
Primary School: Prep (preparatory) - Year 6 (7 years)
High School: Year 7 - 12 (6 years)
College/University: Usually done after High School [I'm currently here ]

Australia also has TAFE colleges (like technical colleges) where you can pick up further skills so you can work in skill- and trade-based jobs (like a plumber, carpenter, designer)

Here in Pakistan

Nursery: Usually when your 3 (1 year)
KinderGarten: After Nursery (2 years)
Primary School: After KG 1 to 5 Class (Grade) (5 years)
Secondary School: Year 6 to 10 (5 years)
College/University: College is usually two years then University depends.

I'm in my Secondary School year 9 xD

In India, this is how it works.
At 3 years you are in kindergarden.
At 4 and 5 you are in Nursery and Upper Kindergarden
Then from 6 years to 15 years you study from 1st Standard to 10th Standard. Depending on the Board you study either 11th or 12th next or I and II Pre-University College. By the time you finish this, you will be 17 years (If you have not failed). Then starts the professional courses which for Engineering is 4 years and Medical is for 5 years. By the time you are out of university, you have a job. I am right now in my first year in Engineering. Bachelors of Engineering, Electronics to be more specific. Looking back, the time seems to have gone in a jiffy.

With us Brits it's like this

Primary School (Years 1 - Years 6) - you are age 5-11
Secondary School (For GCSE'S) (Year 7 - 11) - you are aged 11 - 16
END OF COMPULSORY EDUCATION
College (For A Levels) (Years 12 - 13 if a 6th form usually called Lower sixth and upper sixth) - You are ages 16 - 18
University (Degrees etc) - 18+

Bear in mind there are actually no age-limits as to when you can take these exams, these are they typical routes.
Also instead of GCSE'S and A Levels you could do BTEC'S instead. And this is ignoring the whole boatload of other qualifications you can get (Baccalaureates etc)

Instead of Primary and Secondary there is also a first / middle / high structure which is being fazed out I believe.
Just to make this clear College in the US = University in the UK and most of the rest of the world.

Primary school: Years 1 (5yr olds) to Year 6 (10year olds)
Intermediate: Years 7 (11yr olds) and Year 8 (12yr olds) (note: most primary schools have intermediate built in)
High school/College (same thing): Years 9 (13yr olds) to Year 13 (17yr olds), compulsory schooling ends at 16 years of age
University: not sure (I'm Year 10 )

In the United States, the education system really varies from state to state. In New York City (because there are some differences between New York City and the rest of New York state):

Nursery / Pre-K: 1 year
Elementary School: Kindergarten to 4th, 5th or 6th grade (depends on the school you go to)
Middle School: 5th, 6th or 7th grade to 8th grade. (depends on the school you go to)
High School: 9th to 12th grade.

After graduation of high school, it is no longer compulsory to attend school.

Community College: 2 years (many students elect to go to a 4 year college)
College: 4 years (or 5, if the student is participating in a joint BA-MA program or 6 years if the student is participating in an accelerated doctorate program)

Are you confused yet? LOL. I have no idea about graduate school and beyond, since I'm not there yet!
