image compatibility: Dosnt sound like a linux problem.

Sounds more like a browser problem.
If its a transparent png, and you are using IE6 or less, then you will face problems.

he might also want to check the file extensions. i had something like this happen because i was uploading psd files instead of saving them as jpeg or gif first.

i think his problem is that hes adding something like blabla.com/lol.gif when the correct name might be lol.GIF

since UNIX systems differ things with low or high cap and windows dont, so, to win, lol.gif and lol.GIF are same thing while in UNIX, are 2 different files
