    Re: Computer the Windows Vista

My friends have only had problems with games crashing on their computers at first, but no, I don't have Vista. Otherwise, if the display flickers every now and again, it could be refeshment of the desktop/screen, a faulty graphics driver, bad hardware (can also cause the lock-ups), viruses, and for lock-ups, the computer could be a bit slow, or it could be overheating. My friend's laptop freezes up when it gets too hot and he's playing games on his bed.

Also, how much RAM do you have? If Aero is on and you only have a gig of RAM and you have a lot of programs open, Aero might be using too many resources. Try turning off Aero and see if that helps things up a bit.

Those problems should be caused by your graphics driver. Try updating to the newest one. I have no problems like that, but I always make sure my hardware stuff is up to date as well.

Is your computer off-the-shelf? If so, there shouldn't be problems like that, have you installed much stuff? What programs are running when the problems occur?
    What graphics adapter and driver?

    Edit:
I think the screen flashes when Vista changes the display settings - something to do with aero not being compatible with some programs

    Re: Computer the Windows Vista

I don't know about having to be updated a lot... Windows Update reports the last update was installed November 17th, and that there are no new updates. Games run fine for me, and I'm using the latest nVidia beta graphics driver.

Aero (dwm.exe) is using 80mb memory. The thing that uses the most memory is SuperFetch.

Considering most problems people have with Vista are either hardware, drivers, or software that's not fully compatible with it, that's the first thing to look at. Which is, in effect, everthing. Sorry that's not of more use!

What I can say is that my laptop with an nVidia GeForce4 Go 440 flashes the screen when it starts up because it's checking if a television is attached.

Post your system specification. Is it a laptop by any chance?

I have mixed feelings on vista, Now, don't get me wrong. I hate windows in general. If I could go linux, I would. But I am forced to use it for work. But, it's a daily battle. I think it's female. Some days it's alright, others you want to rip it's coders heads off.
