Proxy servers basically allow you access to websites that would otherwise be blocked on your own network. For instance, let's say you work at a business, and you find out that http://newgrounds.com/ is blocked. If you find a proxy server, you may bypass your own network's blocker and view http://newgrounds.com just fine.
Ajax is a household cleaner. AJAX is "asynchronous javascript and XML". Basically, dynamic webpages/content. Check out http://meebo.com if you need an example.
A little more on AJAX if his small definition doesn't tell you a lot. It let you make parts of your website interactive without additional loading. You can just press a button for example and it will load only a part of the page according to what you want to do.

i use proxies all the time it lets you access a different website by there website in lame mans terms
