Re: No Anti/Virus For 2 months

I can remember when I never needed a firewall and my computer never got a virus *a bad one at least*

But once, about half a year ago, I turned off my firewall and all my anti-virus programs, and within one minute I got about 25 different viruses. Scary how bad it can be without a firewall now-a-days. After that, my computer was so F***ed up that I had to restart it a few times before I could turn my anti-virus programs back on because of the extreme lag.

I usually use the free spyware doctor that you can get off of google now since I find it has the best protection system and when I scan, it finds the most and the worst ones.

I've been running no protection software on this machine for about two years, I just don't seem to be able to get any infections with my browsing habits, and no other issues seem to come up, maybe everyone hates me?

I install something and run a scan every now and then, obviously not enough to protect me, but I've gone two years without strange happenings, personal information logged, accounts compromised.. etc.

The office machine has anti-virus though. I might get one for this too when the next AV payment comes around.

Re: No Anti/Virus For 2 months

The longest I've been without security was back when I had no high speed internet (from year 1998-2006). Oddly enough, back when I had dial-up over two years ago, even though we had a firewall and everything and kept it up to date, viruses and spyware still found their ways into the system. In comes my first broadband connection that is still here, my DSL, and haven't seen a virus since. Spyware may still pop in, but now that I have a Linux box sitting in my basement filtering my internet for me using my own settings, nothing ever gets in now.

When I had dial-up, I only had one computer. That one computer died, and I took the hard drive out, which served as a back-up hard drive down the road after I had gotten DSL after a hard drive crashed and died. When I ran a scan of that computer before I placed it on my network, and this thing before it died had the most up to date stuff ever at the time and had a scan run 2 days before a crash, had about 8 viruses on it, 64 instances of spyware, and about 300 tracking cookies (holy crap). My older gaming computer which replaced my dead computer, and was my only computer in the house until I got DSL, that had internet on it as well, and again, had anti-spyware apps, anti-virus apps, and firewall. That computer only got 3 viruses in it, but had no spyware in it, and it only had 3 or 4 tracking cookies from advertising companies.

So the longest time I've had no security was when I was on dial-up (kind of ironic, but it's true!). The DSL brought loads of security, but yet more incoming ports are open on it than the dial-up.

Re: No Anti/Virus For 2 months

I run AVG antiVirus. I dont use a firewall cause I just hating pressing the ok button just to let a newly installed program get access to the net. Avg is free with free updates and does not slow down your computer like Nortons. you can get it from downloads.com(the free version)

Now this thing about Windows get viruses and Mac and Linux don't, is 100% true. Its cause stupid people do stupid things like "Click the monkey to win a XBOX360" or a i-pod. Also going to those websites to get free screenSavers. Installing and running things from websites you don't know about is what gives you viruses. You can run your computer for months with out having to worry about it, just so long as you dont go to retarded spam filled sites. Alot of times people want to run free programs and get keygens and serials(and porn) those are the sites to be careful of.

Re: No Anti/Virus For 2 months

I edited my above post in case anyone didn't notice, but a key thing to prevent those ads from coming up and saying "Win a Free XBox 360!!!!!!!11111" is to use Adblock, or set up a network solution to filter out that stuff from pages. I use both solutions to do that and it works great (some people in my house used to click on those ads and they alwasy downloaded a stoopid tracking cookie, now with adblock and a network solution I set up by hand, no more ads, no more stoopid cookies, especially the younger internet users in the house that brougt them to game sites like Miniclip :D).

And dial-up (ironically) is less secure than high speed internet in terms of viruses, spyware and other things like that I find.

people, adware/spyware/ viruses "pop though the internet conenction" just as much as aids "spontaniously apears in your kidney".

It gets there by rouge websites/downloading warz or other relates items/ or just a bad download.

any form of internet connection is affected by malware, as it gets on your connection by you downloading it
