Can't verify site with Google

I want to upload a site map so I can get in Google.

But first you must verify your site with Google webmasters, so I uploaded the file, and when I click 'Verify' in Google webmaster tools, I get this message:

Verification status: NOT VERIFIED
Last attempt Jul 10, 2008: We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header.

As you can see, a link goes to some useless help page.

Once before I had it working with my full x10hosting domain (instead of my new CO.CC one), but even if I try it again I get the error message.

if your URL is a redirected one (i.e. co.cc) ,change it & put the actual URL ( i.e http://yoursite.exofire.net/sitemap.xml ) of the file in the Webmaster Sitemap submission in google.

I am set using name servers with co.cc. I will have no problem with the site map, just the verifation of it

Check your 404 error pages in cPanel to make sure they don't point to anything, and then try again after removing them. It sounds like you've made an error configuring them or something, because I have no problems.

Theres an even easier way of verifying. Just choose the meta tag option and add it to the top of the index page.

Easy as that, I prefer to use this method.

I am not sure about uploading the file, but meta tag verification will work fine for you....

Yea. I'll try changing some of the 404 error pages, I have a 404.shtml in simplenerdtalk.x10hosting.com , witch then redirects to simplenerdtalk.co.cc/4042.html. I guess that is the problem.

Otherwise I'll try the meta tag way.

Yes, this sounds like the source of the problem. I'd remove it, as that is not good practice at all because it's reporting a success to the browser even though it should be reporting file not found. Not good really .
