What's the best way to get your webstite popular for free

I was just wondering if there are any other methods of getting your website to be more popular, other than paying for the advertising.

Have a good site where people want to come back and want to stick around. A good site might get mentioned as a good place for "whatever your content is about" on someones personal blog

make sure you spread the word in as many places you can (ie forum sigs, communitys), exchange links/ad banners with other webpage owners (pages with related content might be slightly better)

have good meta tags, so search engines find your page when someone does a search related to your sites content, submit it at search engines (nit sure how necessary that part is nowdays, I never submitted mine and it gets found)

be patient, it will take longer if you don't pay for ads to get the word spread.

Besides doing the standard stuff like LadyAnna said you could also do other stuff. Here's just 3 ideas to get people to your site. It's more like free advertising ideas. Even if these are well executed they may not make a site popular by any means. It's all about the site's content that makes it popular.

• Sign up for a banner exchange program like this one: RLink Non-RLink.
• Submit your site to free pixel advertising sites. Be creative and make an image that people can't resist clicking on.
• Make a kick-ass YouTube video. Think about it, even if you're video is total garbage it will still get hundreds of hits because Youtube has just so many viewers. SO out of the hundreds of people that view your videos there's bound to be people who click on a link to your site in the video's description.

Make sure they layout of your website looks good and loads quickly. No one likes to wait around for a website to load. It needs to have good content - content that makes people keep coming back. It needs to be updated frequently - every day at different hours is best. It really does depend what your site is about as to how much you can update it. Get some forums up so then you have people coming back to add good things towards the community on your sites subject.
