Ultimately, some guy came up with the idea of connecting computers, and since Microsoft was big game at the time, the guy went to Microsoft, who helped start the Internet by implementing it into Windows. Not sure if this is all that accurate, but that's what I hear. I'm sure Wikipedia has something on it.

I always thought it was the US Military who first used a WAN way back in the 60's and then came about the birth of the INTERNET as the technology of TCP/IP was made public.
