Do you have any musical knowledge? At school I used Sibelius, which lets you make music from scratch - putting in notes, etc.

Make some music in a MOD tracker, it's free and you can make some really cool tunes. Just Google mod tracker, and go to http://modarchive.org/ to get some mods for free and see if you like the sound of them.
