    Your view: Notice before suspension?

    After reading this message, I'm interested in finding out whether you think that users should receive an notice by email or some other means before the user's hosting account is suspended.

    Please bear in mind the following points both in favour of and against this before you make your choice:

    • Sending notification before the hosting account is suspended will allow the user to log in to reset the inactivity counter (obviously...);
    • The whole point of the suspension is that it's an intermediary step before termination. Having notices before suspension is like a pre-warning-warning;
    • Users receiving notice of being suspended for inactivity may be the type of user who doesn't make use of the hosting, but keeps the account active 'just in case it might be useful in the future', which wastes disk space resources;
    • Whereas part of the idea behind logging in to the forums regularly is to assess who is actively making use of the services provided, another reason is that important news and announcements can be provided via the News/Announcements forum, instead of sending an email to every user and running the risk of it being marked as spam (which means the user is unlikely to read it). Providing a way for users not to have to regularly log in to the forums means important announcements may be missed.
    Thanks for reading... happy posting!

    [This list may be edited at any point to reflect further points raised]

    EDIT: Edited for clarity (2008-12-21)

    Re: Your view: Notice before suspension?

    I voted no, notice before suspension, I said this because, well, you would not have gotten suspended in the first place if you followed the rules.

    And like the first post says (I think), a suspension is kind of like a warning before termination, so why would anyone give you 2 warnings....not sure if this makes sense.

    Point one, in my opinion should not be made,

    but point 2....is true
    point 3....if inactive users are gone...that means room for more active members...
    point 4 is also true

    Many people, like me, who is inactive in forums (Don't want to waste time in forums) do use their site. I login every week to the forums just to keep my account active. I rather spend time improving my site than just wasting time in forums.

    Hmm...

    Well, I think that it should be no, or maybe yes?

    Well yes because it gives you a heads up why you are getting banned in the first place, given that that person doesn't know.

    Well I'm thinking more on the No side because like John said... you wouldnt have gotten there in the first place

    I don't think anyone ever said you HAVE to post on the forums, logging into the forums in my opinion is the way you are *paying* for your free account to stay up....I think of it like that.

    If no one *pays* in the term I think of it, then you shouldn't have the account anyways, x10hosting's owners or anything like that need to make some money, so by posting on the forum it is as if you are donating them something.

    You can log in for 5 minutes say hello in off-topic forum and log out, or just log in, click a link on the site and log out. You are not forced to make a post, but yes you should do something for your hosting company when they do help you, by being a free host.

    Not sure what point I am trying to make...but it makes sense if you read it over like 5 times, (even if I post something I read it over hehe).

    like john klyne said in his first post,

    i think that giving them another chance would not be correct since they didn't put any effort into following the rules while others do follow the rules

    I was just responding to this statement:
    Users receiving notice of being suspended for inactivity may be the type of user who doesn't use the hosting but keeps the account active 'just in case it might be useful in the future', effectively wasting disk space resources; (leading to the following point)
    P.S: What are you trying to say? (Read it 8 times.) ;)

    Re: Your view: Notice before suspension?

    I voted no, because suspension is instant.

    It's not like a member of staff clicks suspend, and it warns you before actually suspending.
    Maybe notice after suspension, yea.
    But still, you were suspended for a reason, follow the ToS and it wont happen. ;)

    Re: Your view: Notice before suspension?

    I personally would like some kind of notification system that would give a 24 hour notice. Once the user corrected said issues a response can be sent and the suspension would get removed.

    That said I can understand why they don't give a notice to users. I'm sure it's due to a number of issues, I'm not too worried about it at the present time, even after a year of use.
