htaccess & htpasswd

Hi,

I try to use .htaccess and .htpasswd and that does'nt work :

First i had à message box whith "user and password" to input and i think that was ok, but after (an always now) :

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, no-reply@x10hosting.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

These 2 files are in de root (public_html).

What is password protected? Is it a .php file that might be causing the problem?

If the problem is in the .htaccess file, being able to see the contents would make it much easier to diagnose the problem. My psychic powers have been a bit off lately.

Thanks for your answers.
I have solve the problem by accessing the .htaccess file by the cPanel x10hosting:

After login to x10hosting, view detail "Hosting Account Management" --> "login to Cpanel" --> "Security" --> "Protect directory with password".
