Mod_Rewrite Activation

I have to install phpbb seo pack. For it i need mod_rewrite should be activated. But when i ran a script to test whether it is activated or not on chopin server, It was saying No .

So can you please tell what can be done

mod_rewrite on -->when put in .htaccess works for joomla.This means that the server is Ok with mod_rewrite.
Can you check is anything like rewritebase /foldername is also to be set up in the .htaccess file in your phpbb folder?
For joomla it worked only after I set rewritebase /joomlainstallfoldername in .htaccess of joomla installation folder.
