The result from mysql_query isn't valid. It should be something like this:

connect to mysql and what not

$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM my_table");
if (! $result) {
 die("mysql_query() failed!");
}

$numRows = mysql_num_rows($result);

It would be useful if you code post the code that is causing that error, if you want help correcting it.
