    Question VPS - Proxy Server?

Having reviewed several Proxy Server repo's for ubuntu I am not entirely sure I found what I was looking for.

I want to install a 'Proxy Server' that will only allow access via username / password and can only be used for specific port sets.

I want our admins team to be able to use the proxy when visiting our IRC, using IM software or any other related tasks.

Squid might be what I have been looking for but I was unable to find documentation related to usernames and passwords, authenticated use.

I think this function to be vital otherwise our service will likely be abused / leeched from and our 'IP' would be associated with who knows what behaviour...

If you have a similar setup installed, be it squid or a different app please consider assisting me with a few pointers.

    Respetfully,
    MattG

    Re: VPS - Proxy Server?

Proxy servers are not allowed on x10hosting.

Proxies: We do not allow any kind of proxies to be used on our servers, for any reason.

EDIT: This does not appear in the VPS tos: http://x10hosting.com/tos-vps.php Though, you may want to verify it's okay, I've never saw a host which allows it.

    Yes they are, on VPSes.

Why not setting up a VPN instead? That sounds easier than setting up a proxy...

I probably should submit a ticket for clarity if x10 staff do not reply soon to this thread, but I think that it is our VPS, our RAM quota, our Bandwidth and then it is up to us how we use it, law permitting of course.

    A VPN...

This is new terminology for me, well of sorts.

    A Virtual Private Network.
I shall take a look into this and see if it can meet our requirements.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think that when I explain the proposed project will only be accessible to a select few, aprox 25 people MAX that it shall not be an issue with the 'tos' but I better check it out first.

    Thanks Corey,

    [hr]

I took another look at squid proxy and frankly the config is bonkers. the config.ini is several thousand lines of jibberish, but I cast my mind back to having webmin installed and squid is featured in the webmin back-office.

I think it might be worth re-installing webmin so I can configure squid with a gui and if I can get it to do what I am looking for I can remove webmin later.

    http://www.webmin.com

    http://www.squid-cache.org/

Sledge hammer to crack a wallnut springs to mind, but I can config, backup, re-install I guess.
