Video making software?

Short version:
I need to be able to make videos like this one: http://vimeo.com/10803328 and I don't know what software to use. I know Adobe AfterEffect could do that but is it the best solution. AfterEffect is a great piece of software but I feel it's the "overkill" to use it for this kind of videos, and it's learning curve is not that great.

Long version:
I newer really worked with video making and editing software before. Sure I used VirtualDub, Movie Maker and stuff like that, but I only used it for small personal projects. Now I need to learn more about video production (don't ask why ) and I don't know what software to use.

The thing is I only need to make a specific kind videos and I would like to know witch software product is the best for it. Here's the example of the kind of video I need to make.

sony vegas?

I personally would got with AE, but my friend uses vegas and his work comes out nice too. If you are looking for tutorials in AE, www.videocopilot.com is a good source

I'll see about the Vegas, thanks. I heard of it but newer really looked at it.
