    How it works

Essentially it is a secure way of communicating over the web.

After some initial greetings and 'checks', the browser and server exchange a 'key' which is used to encrypt the sessions transmissions. If someone were able to intercept the transmission of say the contents of a form that contains credit card numbers, Social Security information, etc, they would not be able to decrypt it.

Part of the 'greetings and checks' is a digital certificate presented by the server to 'prove' that they are who they say they are.
    Nothing is always absolutely so.

You can't use SSL on free hosting because it requires a dedicated IP address. Free hosting has shared SSL which I don't have a clue how to use.

To use shared SSL, visit https://[servername].x10hosting.com/~cpanelusername

It's not working properly right now after the recent server migrations but it will be configured soon.

If you bought your own private SSL certificate, you need a dedicated IP address for your website, which you need to get premium hosting for. It is not possible to get a dedicated IP on free hosting.
