I wish I could help, but in phpbb the rank images don't ever work for me either. Is there anyone who can get it to work and put the rank images anywhere in the phpbb root

i got it u need to put them in ur forum/images put them in that folder then go to ur admins in rank where it saids images just put images/name of the pics (example admin.gif) and it should come up

Last time I setup PhpBB you simply imput the image URL when you created/edited the rank....been a while though, I doubt they would take out a feature like that.
